The opening fortnight is the most demanding stretch any SWAC team faces. On Sunday, September 6, FAMU meets South Carolina State in the Orange Blossom Classic at Hard Rock Stadium, live on ESPN, with the Bulldogs arriving as reigning MEAC champions and Celebration Bowl winners — and the Rattlers as the designated home team. Four days later FAMU is back in the same building to face Miami on a Thursday night, the only FBS opponent on the schedule. Two games in Miami inside five days, one of them nationally televised, is an unusual way to launch a new head coach's tenure.
Bragg Memorial Stadium gets three straight Saturday nights to open the home slate, against Albany State, Tennessee State and then Alabama A&M in the SWAC opener, before the schedule shifts entirely to afternoon kickoffs. Homecoming on October 24 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff is one of the biggest weekends on the HBCU calendar, drawing alumni from across the country. The season ends where it always does: the Florida Blue Florida Classic against Bethune-Cookman at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on November 21, routinely one of the best-attended games in FCS football and the game the whole state circles.
